Just the Facts:

  • Aftermarket company Sound Man installs an iPad in a Toyota Tacoma’s dash.
  • A video series on the firm’s Web site shows you how the installation was done.
  • This follows Hyundai’s announcement that it would offer an iPad with every 2011 Equus.

SANTA CLARITA, California — Although Hyundai already announced it will sell every 2011 Equus with an Apple iPad as an owner’s manual, the aftermarket has already started coming up with some solutions of its own in the giddy hours following the iPad’s official release. SoundMan Car Audio wasted no time fitting an iPad into the dash of a Toyota Tacoma.

In the video below, the SoundMan team shows step-by-step how it performed the installation. The iPad in the dash is merely a mock setup for the moment, but the team has plans to get an elaborate sound system up soon that will go along with the iPad.

In this Tacoma, SoundMan installed an Audison Bit One processor, a McIntosh six-channel amp, Onkyo ND-S1 and an iPod dock. The team repositioned some of the switches to the left of the steering wheel and installed the Bit One there, which will control the volume and audio settings.

Post-installation, the iPad is now the only media source in the Tacoma.

Check out the video below to see the installation process and get a peek at what a dashboard mounted iPad looks like.

In the video, the installers pull up Pandora as well as a YouTube video after they complete the iPad head unit conversion. Of course, SoundMan only had access to the WiFi version of the iPad, though, which means the unit has to be connected to a wireless network to utilize its full capabilities. That will likely change when the 3G model comes out later this month.
